Ask any serious 4WD touring enthusiast what they’d like to experience in the Australian Desert and chances are, conquering Big Red is on their Bucket List. The famous sand dune is situated on the eastern edge of the Simpson Desert, 35kms from the iconic town, Birdsville. It’s between 30-40 meters high and if you plan to drive up you had better have your wits about you as it is not easy or for the beginner driver.
This shot of father and son discussing their next big challenge means a lot to us for many reasons. John and his dad had talked for years of visiting the Simpson Desert together to explore the tracks, and in May/June 2016 they ticked off Big Red and the surrounding French Line and QAA Line tracks.
Sadly in August 2016, less than three months after this photo, Johns dad passed away. John senior was an experienced traveller (he and Jenny have explored most of Australia) he was an incredibly knowledgeable man and a great father and friend. Thankfully we were fortunate to travel with John and Jenny for the first two months of our trip and share many adventures together.
